There’s nothing worse than hopping in your car and finding out that it won’t start. Your automotive battery provides electrical power to the vehicle’s: starter, lights, ignition system, and accessories.
Inside the battery, you’ll find components such as lead oxide (positive plates), lead (negative plates), sulfuric acid (electrolytes surrounding the plates), the case, and terminals (positive and negative).
The battery plates make up six galvanic cells (electrochemical cell) and each cell provides 2 volts of electricity for a total of 12 volts.
Automotive Battery failure can offer by way of:
- Shorted cell due to failure of the separator between the positive and negative plates.
- Shorted cells due to the building up of shed plate material below the plates of the cell.
- Broken internal connections due to corrosion.
- Broken plates due to vibration and corrosion.
- Cracked or broken case.
- Low electrolyte level.
- Broken terminals.
- Sulfation after prolonged issues in a low or zero-charged state.
- Frequent and continuous overcharging.
Corrosion – lead sulfate (white powder) forms at the battery terminals. This substance is toxic by inhalation, ingestion, and skin contact. Poor sealing between the plastic battery case and the lead posts often leads to corrosion. Overcharging the battery can speed up that corrosion process as well – making it a compounding issue. Other causes of corrosion can be salt water, dirt, heat, humidity, and cracking in the plastic casing or loose terminals.
A battery service can provide your customers with peace of mind and some extra revenue for the shop. It will provide them with:
- Longer battery life.
- More reliable starting conditions.
- Reduced probability of electrical problems that are a result of poor cable to battery connections.
- Reduced costly repairs due to corrosion damage.
The Wynn’s Battery Terminal Cleaner & Leak Detector helps to neutralize built-up corrosion on an automotive battery so it can easily be washed away with water. In addition to neutralizing the corrosion the pH reactive dye turns pink if there is any contact with battery acid leaking from the terminals or if the battery is cracked helping the technician determine if the battery needs to be replaced.
The Wynn’s Battery Terminal Protector Pads are inundated with an anti-corrosion chemical which prevents the future build-up of corrosion. The pads are easily installed on either side post or top-post style batteries.
Combining a Wynn’s Battery service with a complete charging system test can provide your customer with a complete system service that will help to prevent no-start situations which leave the customer stranded. In addition to performing this service on the existing battery, it is a great product to use when battery replacement is being performed to increase the life of the new battery.
